snom m9r

it's not the answer we were looking for
We own a small business and we have been searching for a system that has cordless handsets that could be part of the system. snom 370 plus snom m9r was sold to us as the solution to our issues ..... NOT!!! We have suffered thru one year with this phone system and we now have one desktop phone set as well as one of the m9r that do not work. As far as the m9r is concerned, we have always had an issue with the person on the other end of the call not being able to hear us. Very frustrating when you're trying to run a business!!! Not a snom fan!

Over-Hyped Under-Performer
I purchased the Snom m9r system and 3 additional handsets to perform field testing for a potential client. I will admit, the purchase decision was based primarily on price... Thus far, I have re-learned one simple and time-tested fact: you get what you pay for (regardless of hype).

The price point for this system puts it squarly in the target of the SoHo/Prosumer buyer. Be warned however, this is NOT the IP/DECT system you are looking for!

For starters; these phones are QUITE; not a good quite. They are the kind of quite that makes them almost unserviceable. Even with the latest firmware and volume controls set to their respective max settings, the audio through the handset is just barely able to be heard above even the most subtle of background noises (aka a ceiling fan)... Granted, I have spent the majority of my working life doing IT work in industrial settings, so my hearing isn't the best. However, when other people attempt to use this phone system in the peace and quite of my home, they complain about how hard it is to hear. This issue has been raised by others also. What really makes it repugnant it that Snom is apparently ignoring it. So, if you are thinking about this system for any enviroment that isn't 'library quite', you might want to look at the alternatives.

Second, this system has less than zero (if that's even possible) capability to integrate with LDAP. It might just be my opinion, but if your going to aim a product at a SoHo/Prosumer market, it should atleast have the capability to perform basic integration with LDAP. Who wants to generate multiple phone books (regardless of format) for distribution when ActiveDirectory/LDAP does such an amazing job at such things?

Third, who designs anything electronical that has a clock function which ONLY works with an NTP Server? If you were thinking about using this system in an enviroment that is IP isolated (a la a military/sensative development or production enviroment) and you desire to have an accurite representation of the date and time; you should look elsewere since there is no way to manually establish the time and date for the system without the additional cash layout (or network configuration) for an internal NTP source.

Fourth; the handsets are small and lightweight. They feel cheap. Not that anyone would ever intentionally turn a handset into a projectile or test the law of gravity inadvertantly but I'd bet against these handsets surviving the experience if either happened.

Finally; and in my opinion the most glaring, there is no messge waiting indicator (MWI). Sure it shows a missed call count... So does a $20 2.4GHz POTS handsent from W-Mart. How does that even pass the smell test?

If you are in the market for an IP/DECT system, look at your other options before you purchase this system. I realize it's early in it's lifecycle but it's flaws are unacceptable. I will be scraping this system as a home system in the near future.

snom m9r is perfect
we are using snom m9r and they work very well. Are stable and convenient for use.
